Library Loot

It turns out Mike Leigh may be the second best thing to come out of the UK (next to Radiohead). Seriously. Before last week’s loot, I had only seen Naked, and Happy-Go-Lucky.  Now I’m proud to add Vera Drake and Secrets and Lies to the list.  Both the films were fantastic.  It’s interesting to see reoccurring characters in each of the movies.  What’s with all the greedy, materialistic housewives?  Vera Drake was refreshingly authentic in it’s... Read More

Today I feel like this:

Once again, I’m influenced by Ivy over at Do You Have a Flag? Her regular feature called ‘Today I feel like this:’ is now something I’d like to do myself.  It’s pretty self explanatory.  Read More

The Limits of Control

It seems I constantly regret not being more familiar with Jim Jarmusch’s work. Since the last time I wrote about him, despite being offered several good selections, I still haven’t seen much of his. However, now I can add The Limits of Control to this short list, and despite being an exercise in patience, it leaves me wanting more. Jarmusch wrote the script for this film, and its minimalism is intriguing in the same way I very much enjoyed Gus Van Sant’s Gerry;... Read More

Library Loot

I made it to the library again today. I love that place. Unfortunately, I only finished two of the four movies I checked out last time. Taxi Driver may end up becoming one of my all time top favorite movies. That was awesome. I like how De Niro mostly acts like a retard in his earlier films.  The Ice Storm most definitely broke into my top favorite films.  I’m all about movies like Revolutionary Road, Little Children, and American Beauty.  As a twenty four year old... Read More

Up

Up is another one of those films that has media saturation already.  I’ll be the first to admit, I have a hard time understanding animated film.  The manipulation drives me insane.  The little boy isn’t just cute, with a heart made of gold and gold and a lisp, he also confides in this lonely, loveable old man who recently saw his adoring wife pass away about his absentee father, and how he just wants his father to pin his merit badge on him at the scouting ceremony. ... Read More

The Hangover

I’m not one for comedies usually.  My pretensions when it comes to film has reached an all time (and uncomfortable) high right now.  But every once in a while, a comedy will come along that will bring joy to the inner most parts of my soul.  The Hangover has managed to do this.  It seems to be the perfect storm, bringing together my love of Las Vegas, my fear of commitment/relationships, and weirdly identifying with the Fat Jesus character. My experience would usually... Read More

My DVD Collection

Ivy at Do You Have a Flag? started this bitchin’ trend just a few short days ago.  If you haven’t done so, you should take pictures of your DVD collection, no matter how embarrassing it is. Here are some things you should note about my collection: Yes, I do have two copies of Bjork’s Greatest Hits music videos. Lots of the titles are in foreign languages because I buy them when traveling to other countries. Yes, I do have an unopened collector’s edition... Read More

Shall We Kiss? (Un baiser s’il vous plaît)

The tag line for Shall We Kiss? says something like, ‘it’s a film that explores the perils and pleasures of a simple kiss.’  This single premise sounds a little hokey for my usual tastes.  But I was convinced to see it for a few reasons: 1) I went with a date, 2) it’s French and I can’t get enough of French Films right now, 3) it has better reviews than The Brothers Bloom.  I’m glad I drove 45 minutes to see it. The film is directed by Emmanuel... Read More
