The Brothers Bloom
The critical success of Rian Johnson’s Brick gave him a lot of freedom for his second feature film The Brothers Bloom. Unfortunately, like a lot of other directors, with this new found freedom of better actors, and a higher budget, this writer/director fell into some of the same pitfalls as directors like Guy Ritchie: all style, very little substance. Johnson himself stated that he based his three main characters on those of Homer’s Odyssey. If this isn’t... Read More
Catching Out, plus an interview with the director, Sarah George
Sarah George’s 2003 documentary Catching Out has a very nostalgic, and ethereal feel. It follows self-proclaimed tramps, hobos, and societal outcasts that choose to illegally hop freight trains to travel the country, trying to keep alive a very American tradition under siege by new, tougher laws, and less tolerant railroad companies. These scruffy people claim it’s the last freedom available to anyone who doesn’t want to be a slave to the American regime of... Read More
Moon
The trailer for Duncan Jones’ debut film Moon doesn’t give a whole lot away when it comes to the film’s plot, but it certainly shows it’s influence from films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris. This notion, it’s notoriously small budget, and its first time director are enough to make anyone weary going in. Jones did little to disperse these concerns in the first half of Moon. Sam Rockwell plays Sam Bell, the lone operator of a energy mining... Read More
(500) Days of Summer
I can’t say that (500) Days of Summer is an exceptionally original film. The plot, the formula of the whole thing is almost what you’d call derivative. For this reason, it’s difficult to understand why exactly I liked this film so much. It’s refreshing to see what is advertised as a romantic comedy (it’s not, I promise) from the male perspective. While not all rom-coms are from the woman’s point of view, it seems that most of them exhibit... Read More
Library Loot
If you remember from last week’s Library Loot, I had hit a wall when it came to watching movies. I thought TV on DVD would be the cure, and I’m a little embarrassed to say that I finished fifteen hour long episodes of My So-Called Life, fifteen hour long episodes of True Blood, and twelve episodes of Extras in 4 days. Mind you, much of this was done at work. You wouldn’t believe how fast a ten hour shift goes when watching True Blood. When it came to My S0-Called... Read More
Library Loot
I failed miserably at my last ambitious library loot attempt. Seriously. Out of seven films, I saw one. I suppose it makes sense, two of those rented I had already seen. And there was a three day holiday weekend that distracted me, plus a few other extra-curriculars. The only one I managed to watch was Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise. I really didn’t care for it. I know it’s supposed to be hilarious, but I just didn’t get it. There was a funny... Read More
