Lars von Trier and Martin Scorsese will be remaking The Five Obstructions

I found The Five Obstructions to be one of the most memorable documentaries I’ve ever seen. If you’ve never seen the film the premise is simple.  Lars von Trier challenges the director of his all-time favorite short (watch it here), Jørgen Leth, to redirect that film five times, each time submitting to an arbitrary set of rules, decided on by von Trier.  For example, remaking the film as a cartoon, or recreating it with shots no longer than twelve seconds each.

Each film created is beautiful and memorable, but what’s more interesting is watching the interaction between the two great directors.  /Film has confirmed today that von Trier and Martin Scorsese will be conducting the same experiment in a remake of sorts of The Five Obstructions.  Von Trier will again be setting the parameters with Scorsese doing the directing.  No more information has really been released besides the fact each party has confirmed its participation.  Now the discussion has turned to the concern these two might try and tackle Taxi Driver as their source material.  I’d prefer them to leave that classic alone as well.  But what if Scorsese built on an already incredible piece?  That could be interesting.  Of all of Scorsese’s films, which would you prefer he remakes five times according to the bizarre rules set up by the director of Antichrist?

I think TAXI DRIVER might be the best choice – it sort of seems like one of Scorsese’s more “experimental” films, and I’d love to see what we’d end up with under some of the obstructions von Trier might enforce

@ Tom – That’s a good point, it is his most experimental film. I think it’s a generally good idea. Here’s hoping I’m/we’re not mistaken.

  3. I will definitely be first in line to see this. Not because I love Lars von Trier. It’s also because he’s challenging one of the last great living directors out there. I think what he’ll be doing is have Marty re-do a scene from one of his films with rules. von Trier vs. Scorsese. Who will win?

    I’d say BRING IT ON!!!!
