Library Loot

September 15th, 2009 by Blake

library-lootThis blogging thing is getting away from me since school is kicking into high gear. Plus, everything in theatres sucks right now. A Tyler Perry movie? White Out? Sorority Row? Really? Good lord.  It’s a good thing that better films are just around the corner.  I can barely stand reading my blogging friends’ reports of TIFF.  Please, PLEASE tell me how awesome The Road is just as soon as possible.  Thanks!

As for last time’s Library Loot, I was blown away with Europa.  Seriously, that film is insanely good.  I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I saw it almost two weeks ago.  Usually I hate when directors switch back and forth between color and black and white (yeah, I’m looking at you, Tarkovsky!), but Lars von Trier managed to do it perfectly.

As for Manderlay, I was totally bummed to find out that it’s actually the sequel to Dogville (since I haven’t seen that yet), but that’s what I get for not doing my research.  It’s like when my friends come up to me as the movie guy and express how disappointed they were in  All About Steve.  Always do your research.  Despite the pretentious minimalism and von Trier’s finger wagging about America’s history with slavery, I really enjoyed Manderlay.

I didn’t get to watch Medea, but that’s cool, because I saw it once on stage at a small college when I was in high school, so it’s probably just the same thing.

Here’s this week’s loot:
