Library Loot

library-lootI made it to the library again today. I love that place. Unfortunately, I only finished two of the four movies I checked out last time. Taxi Driver may end up becoming one of my all time top favorite movies. That was awesome. I like how De Niro mostly acts like a retard in his earlier films.  The Ice Storm most definitely broke into my top favorite films.  I’m all about movies like Revolutionary Road, Little Children, and American Beauty.  As a twenty four year old single guy, nothing is more scary than suburbia.  The Ice Storm was nearly perfect.  I started watching Mean Streets but had a rough time getting into it, and before I knew it, it was time to turn it back in.  I’ll catch it some other time.  I didn’t even attempt Sunshine, I was just not in the mood for a Ralph Fiennes Holocaust film last week.

So here’s the new loot.  I went to the library without a list (which is unusual), and ended up picking the first three Mike Leigh films that came up on the computer.  Here they are:

  1. Sounds like and ambitious and exploratory selection last time and a lighter fare this time around. Never discount lighter fare though, although out of the three I’ve only seen Topsy Turvy it’s one of my favourite films – but just like Shakespeare in love that is quite likely in part to working in theatre.

I am looking forward to hearing what you think of this selection!

  2. Simon says:

Mike Leigh is someone who I really want to get into myself and, as a teacher myself, I was really keen to see Happy-go-lucky but now fear i have missed the boat. I’ll track it down. The Scorsese choices were great though – I often have a similar feeling to early break-out movies from acclaimed directors. They are never as good as the films made afterwards (Taxi Driver tops mean Streets any day!), but there is something so unique about that cheap, rough filmmaking combined with truly fascinating direction. Spielberg’s ‘Duel’ and Tarantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs’ . I wanted to choose less-mainstream directors but, those examples do prove my point.
