Shia says all the sex in Nymphomaniac will be unsimulated
Shia Labeouf announced this week that his is forthwith eschewing tradition Hollywood studios. Because, you know, it’s good business to bite the hand that feeds you $30 million dollars so you can be in schmaltzy music videos, and have unsimulated sex on a movie set while Lars von Trier watches. Yes, Labeouf has a part in von Trier’s next project titled Nymphomaniac. In regards to his quitting the studio system, Labeouf said to The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m done. There’s no room for being a visionary in the studio system. It literally cannot exist. You give Terrence Malick a movie like Transformers, and he’s fucked. There’s no way for him to exist in that world.” I’m a bit put off he doesn’t include Michael Bay in the list of ‘visionaries’ he apparently wants to work with.
And in regards to Nymphomaniac, Shia promises it’s all going to be the real deal, “It is what you think it is. There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says, ‘we’re doing it for real.’ And anything that is ‘illegal’ will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening.” The actor has shown his willingness to get all naked in the name of art. I don’t see Shia falling in to the talent ranks of the von Trier’s talented casts which include Charlotte Gainsbourg, Nicole Kidman (both of whom have parts in Nymphmaniac, or Emily Watson (that poor, poor Bessie). And I just can’t believe that Labeouf has the courage to say no when Spielberg calls him up for Indiana Jones 5.
The only parts of Labeouf’s superstar trajectory I’ve been interested in are the Walgreen and bar fight arrests, and when he gets so angry at dead butterflies while in pantyhose. You are not a provocateur, sir. Let us not forget Charlies Angels, Even Stevens, Constantine, I, Robot, Disturbia, Indiana Jones, Eagle Eye… the list goes on and on. But I do have a soft spot for von Trier, despite his Nazi-sympathizing, and the general disaster that was Antichrist. I am unashamed to look forward to Nymphomaniac with great anticipation. Perhaps he may even do with Shia what he did with Kristin Dunst. One can always hope.
On a final post script, I’d like to mention that if Labeouf’s statements are true, can you blame Nicole Kidman’s adopted children for choosing to live with Cruise?
